Regular exercise can help protect you from heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, noninsulin-dependent diabetes, obesity, back pain, osteoporosis, and can improve your mood and help you to better manage stress.

Aerobic activity not only burns calories but also increases your metabolism and can keep it elevated for several hours after a workout. You don’t need to spend hours each day on the treadmill or bike to reap the benefits.  Exercising aerobically for as little as 20 minutes, three to five days a week will make a big difference. Extra movement throughout the day is also essential, take the stairs instead of the lift, lose the remote and move at every opportunity you can.

If you have been inactive for a while, you may want to start with less strenuous activities such as walking or swimming at a comfortable pace. Beginning at a slow pace will allow you to become physically fit without straining your body. Once you are in better shape, you can gradually do more strenuous activity.

How Physical Activity Impacts Health

3. Promote healthy blood sugar levels to prevent or control diabetes.

5. Reduce the overall risk of cancer.

6. Boost self-confidence and help prevent depression and anxiety.

7. In combination with a balanced diet, help to maintain and control a healthy weight.

8. Promote bone density to protect against osteoporosis, maintain healthy muscles, and joints.

10.Helps older adults become stronger and better able to move about without falling.
